Grand Theft Auto V is set in the state of San Andreas; which is based on the real-life Southern California. San Andreas features two counties, Los Santos County, which consists of Los Santos proper, the City of Davis (which is incorporated into Los Santos), the hills to the north of the city consisting of high-end suburban housing and the ensuring lush green countryside; and Blaine County, consisting of all rural towns, desert, mountains, forests and farmland north of the Los Santos County. The events of Grand Theft Auto V take place in the present day (2013).

Los Santos

Los Santos, the city of saints, is based off of the real-life Los Angeles; and like its real life counterpart, it is a huge sprawling metropolis with a lot of cultures, the film making industry as well as the ghettos and hood-life; and the sun-soaked beaches. Los Santos is served by the Los Santos International Airport, which is one of the busiest airposts in the world. 

It was established in 1781 and has a population of approximately 13 million people.

South Los Santos

South Los Santos is a predominately lower/working class neighbourhood in Los Santos and consists of the suburbs of Strawberry, Rancho, Chamberlain Hills, La Puerta, Davis and the Los Santos International Airport. It is also ripe with gang activity, with all sets of The Families occupying turf in this area, along with their sworn rivals, the Ballas.


Rockford Hills

Rockford Hills is a very affluent neighbourhood to the north of Los Santos, and consists of large mansions and designer, upperclass commercial areas. It is fair to say that this area is home to the wealthy. 




Blaine County

To the north of Los Santos lies Blaine County, a predominately rural area consisting of mountains, rural towns and villages, forests, farmlands and a large desert and is approximately three times the size of the City of Los Santos, and around the same size as the whole of Los Santos county. It is the single biggest natural area ever created in a GTA title.

Grapeseed

A small town in Blaine County north-east of the Alumo Sea. It is primarily an agricultural area, where the "only thing farmed [out there] is methamphetamine". Grapeseed also features a small area dedicated to commerce.



Sandy Shores

Sandy Shores is a town that overlooks the Alumo Sea, and is also where Trevor Philips lives. It is a poor and rundown town, with most of its residents living in trailers. There are also meth labs and prostitutes aplenty in this town as well.



Paleto Bay

Paleto is the northern-most town on the map, and is situated along the northern coast of Blaine County, and near the base of Mount Chilliad. It is home to the Blaine County Savings Bank, which is robbed in a heist by the three protagonists. A business, The Hen House, is also available for purchase by any of the protagonists.
